Blogs I love

Before deciding to start a blog, I was (and still am) an avid blog reader. I follow so many blogs with bloglovin it has become one of my daily little rituals: browsing through bloglovin to see which posts I'm interested in for the day. I follow a bit of everything, the majority of it beauty and fashion related, plus size or non plus size. So I thought it could be useful or interesting for you to know some of the bloggers I follow and recommend. I know that when I started trying to find plus size blogs I didn't find that much information, so over the years I've gathered a little collection that might help you plus size ladies finding what you want. I am sorry but this list doesn't have any portuguese plus size bloggers because I haven't found any that I love (if you know of one, leave it in the comments section because I would like to know). This should go without saying but I'm obviously not mentioning these bloggers because I'm getting payed or doing them a favor - they don't even know I exist, I'm just mentioning them because I truly do read these on a daily basis. The list isn't in any particular order.

I have a very special place in my heart for this blog, because it was one of the very first plus size bloggers I found and it was the first that made me feel like I could do this - accepting me and my body even being plus size. It's without a doubt one of my favorites, she could post about toilet paper and I'd still read it. She posts mostly about outfits and lifestyle, her lovely personality shines through her writing and she's gorgeous - check her out.

I discovered it last year and in a very lazy day I went through all of her posts. She shares my love for lingerie and she posts a lot of lingerie reviews and pictures. She looks absolutely stunning in every single piece of lingerie and makes me want to run to the shop and buy it - if only those shops were available in Portugal. She also updates her instagram quite often with beautiful pictures from photoshoots.

I think I stumbled upon this one while searching for Lush product reviews, and she so happens to be a former Lush employee so she had a lot of lush related content which I welcomed. She's also a very gorgeous girl and her bold red hair makes me jelly (in a nice way).

Beautiful outfits, to die for. Very classy and feminine style, I love it when she posts a new outfit and never disappoints.

The most recent addition to my bloglovin but still made it into this recommendation post. Beautiful photography with very bold outfits and interesting combinations that I wouldn't think of at first but she makes it work.

Beautifully designed blog, it's so cute. I love her, she has a very sparkly and slightly geeky personality (she got married at hogwarts, how cool is she?!). She posts outfits, beauty related things like product reviews, book reviews or even lifestyle (she currently has a therapy diary that might help you if you're thinking of starting CBT).

There are many others that I could have mentioned but I didn't want this post to get too long.

Which bloggers do you follow and love?

Filipa wears

On Saturday when we went out to dinner this is what I wore. I'm sorry about the lighting and the picture quality but it was evening and not much we could do about it. It's so cold here so the best is really to have a thick sweater on and winter boots. This sweater was a great purchase, I like the lace detailing at the hips. The lace detailing on the neckline isn't as welcome because it rubs against my neck and it makes me itchy, I might cut it off. The boots were also quite a find and they're perfect for winter here in Sweden, very sturdy and warm.

Sweater: Forever 21 (1X) - completely sold out, sort of similar here
Jeans: Primark (20) - similar here
Boots: Ellos (bought it through the Portuguese La Redoute)

Week 5 - Weight Loss Journal

Hey there!

This week was hard to stay away from some temptations. Last night we went to a dinner date at a pizza buffet which was really fun. After many failed diets I figured that for me the best thing is to not have a diet, so if you're sitting there wondering why I go for a pizza buffet while trying to lose weight that is why. I don't believe in restricting myself in what I can or cannot eat, I still want to enjoy food but in a healthier and more balanced way. So once in a while it's good to cheat a little and it doesn't mean that since I cheated the diet is over. I'm looking for a lifestyle here, not a temporary diet. I know from experience that dieting, unless it translates into a change in mentality and lifestyle, doesn't work. Around 4 or 5 years ago I lost a lot of weight from the famous and at the time popular soup diet. It worked indeed like a charm, but it couldn't be maintained for the rest of my life. So guess what? Once I stopped not only did I gain back all the weight I lost but also some extra.

Note: By the way, I think I'll only do the measurements once a month from now on, because from one week to the other it's normal to not see that many changes and it becomes very repetitive.

Food

So besides the pizza buffet last night, I've been eating salad as a side dish to every meal. I also had the good old steak with french fries and egg - but instead of frying the potatoes (deep frying food grosses me out a bit) I baked them in the oven and it tasted pretty much the same, without all the extra grease. I brought some eggplants from Portugal with me since I had never tried them and they were on sale. I'm not sure how I feel about eggplant, it doesn't really taste like much and the texture is odd (maybe I'm not cooking it right, they feel soggy, so if you have tips on it let me know). We had some salmon too with baked potato and salad. For the past two days we had something I'm very fond off - leftover meals. I love taking leftovers and making them into a big diversified meal, even if they're odd combinations - don't judge me. So today for lunch we wanted to use up some salad and avocado we had, so I made some guacamole to eat with toasts, potato salad and some cold meat on the side (smoked turkey). Oh and today we had some pancakes in the afternoon.

Exercise

We've been going out for walks a lot. I'm still in Sweden and I want to get to know my way around my boyfriend's town, so we go on walks for me to mentally map the area. This week we went on 4 fast pace walks, each over an hour long. It's a relatively low impact activity and I find it very fun if there's someone I can go with and in such a beautiful location such as this one. One of the days when my boyfriend came home from work we went outside for a bit because it was snowing. I have never been in the snow before so I was beyond excited and I hope it snows again soon.

My green smoothie experience | part 2

Welcome to part 2 of my smoothie experience. You can read part 1 here.

You can mix and match pretty much anything, and there are a lot more ingredient options than the ones I put in the infographic, but those are the ones I reach for. This is the recipe I do every single day, I just rotate the strawberries and pineapple for other fruits I have available. Sometimes I add 2 tea spoons of chia seeds and it keeps me fuller longer.

My very basic recipe is as follows:
2 hand fulls of spinach
1 glass of water (approximately 250mL)
1 banana
5 strawberries
4 chunks of pineapple
Juice of one orange

Some tips and pointers:
  • After a long time of eating smoothies with leafy spinach chunks, I came across a tip on the Internet that totally changed the game for me - blend the liquid with the leafy greens first before adding the rest of the ingredients.
  • Since I use so few ingredients in my smoothies, I need the sweetness to come from somewhere. I never ever make smoothies if I'm out of bananas - since I don't add any sweeteners such as honey or stevia, I need the banana to provide enough sweetness in the smoothie for it to taste good for me.
  • If you want some extra smoothness, try adding a tablespoon or so of avocado, it does the trick.
  • Proceed at your own risk but I have tried smoothies with apple and I hated it because of the texture it gives, so maybe don't try it on your first smoothie.
  • Don't go being all healthy like a champ on your first smoothie adding a huge lot of leafy greens thinking it's all or nothing - you won't like it and you'll be less likely to stick with it. Set yourself up for success - ease it in, add more spinach each time and you'll eventually get there.
  • Since we're on the subject of all or nothing - don't feel like if you don't do it everyday it's not worth it. Adapt it to your schedule and your needs. If you can't do it every single morning because you start work or school really early and you don't want to wake everyone in the house by blending a smoothie with your very noisy blender (true story), then don't.
  • It´s harder to have to buy fresh ingredients every few days, so what I do is freeze almost everything I can. You can even chop everything up and put it in the freezer, that way in the morning you already have all prepped.
Even if you can't eat greens to save your life, give this a try - if you start out easy you won't even taste the spinach or the kale or whatever you choose to have in your smoothie.

Have you seen any results/benefits from drinking green smoothies?

I´m not going to say I feel a lot more energised and ready to take on the world, because I simply can't tell that by drinking a smoothie every morning. But what I can tell you is that I feel a lot better about myself, I feel like I'm empowering myself by doing such a good thing for my body and my health instead of falling back into my old breakfast habit of having anything with chocolate that I could find in the pantry. It's a good way to make sure I'm getting my recommended vegetable and fruit portions, since in the morning I already get a good head start for the day so there's less pressure. I've been doing this for almost a year and I notice my skin is so much better than it used to (I used to break out a lot and I feel like now my skin is better). Let's not be too gullible  and think it's solely from drinking green smoothies, it might be from a number of factors ranging from a healthier lifestyle to a better skincare regimen, but I do feel like starting the green smoothies was a turning point for my skin.

Which blender should I get?

I wish I could be of more help with this one, but I'd advise you to do your research. There are very good blenders out there which are very popular, such as the NutriBullet, but it also comes with a big price tag and not readily available everywhere (definitely not in Portugal). So the best you can do is really get googling and reading reviews, check what's available in your local shops. I would recommend you mine if I were 100% happy with it, which I'm not. I bought a hand held blender because it was the same price as a stationary blender but had a lot more motor power. Looking back I would have bought a stationary blender for the convenience of it - the hand held ones can be very messy and you can't leave it unattended standing inside your smoothie cup because it can tip over and make a mess out of your kitchen (take my word for it!). When I was researching to buy a blender I found some pages recommending that it has at least 1000 watts for smoothies, so maybe that's a good starting point (the one I bought has 600 watts and it still does the job).

I'm just starting, what other sources could I check for ideas?

I'm going to state the obvious here: the internet is a world and you can find so many recipes out there. I recommend a website I visited A LOT when I was researching and learning more about green smoothies - Simple Green Smoothies. It's really worth it, a lot of information in a clean and user friendly website. This post is also good for some simple recipes.
I would also recommend a youtube video I like (I love the whole channel, check it out if you want healthy recipes). This video in particular has 5 gorgeous smoothie recipes, only one of them is a green smoothie but still worth checking out for some yummy and healthy fruit smoothies.

My green smoothie experience | Part 1

Note: This post was too big so I split it into two. You can read the second part here.

I remember my first green smoothie: it was a fairly complicated recipe for a beginner, tasted like grass and I actually had to pinch my nose to get it down - and I did that the entire week! I was so keen on making a change that I sacrificed the flavour and satisfaction of having breakfast for that. After that week I decided to drop the recipe I had found and experiment a bit, and my smoothies became more and more satisfying. I prefer to keep it simple and quick to make, because if I'm in a hurry to get to school in the morning I don't want to be lining up and measuring 15 ingredients - in that case I would end up reaching for a pack of chocolate cookies for the convenience and that's not the point.

I'm sure you can figure out a good recipe that works for you without my help, but I'd like to share a basic starting guide that you can build on to make your perfect smoothie that suits your taste buds. I made an infographic for you and I hope it's helpful:

*Feel free to use this infographic but please give me the deserved credit for it.

I hope it was helpful for you and I'd love to hear any tips or ideas for smoothies you might have.

Week 4 weight loss journal

12th to 18th of January

It's week 4 now. This week was very busy trying to make all the arrangements for travelling, but now I'm very chill in Sweden. It's not snowing yet but I'm hoping it will soon since I've never seen snow in person, I'm really excited.

                                                       Measurements

            Height - 164 cm
        Waist - 90 cm
          Hips - 113 (-1)
           Thighs - 77 cm
    Chest -113

Food Journal

This week I've been cooking a lot of those frozen vegetable mixes - it's so practical and convenient to not have to prep all the veggies. For breakfast it's the usual green smoothie, although I've had toasts on a couple of days. I also had plane food and some sushi with my boyfriend later that day. As snacks I've been eating clementines on their own or mixed in with some yogurt and chopped almonds. I drank a lot of water this week, around 2-3L per day.

Exercise

This week I've been a good girl with exercising. I did it 3 times, 2 of those were dance workout videos as normal, 40 minutes each. The third time was a walk with my boyfriend for an hour and a half while geocaching - will tell you all about it in another post.

New In | primark and H&M

Hey everyone =)
By the time you read this I'll be on my way to the beautiful Sweden and I'm so excited. Will try to do some posts about what I've been doing there. Back to the topic of this post, on Saturday I went shopping to check the sales and I must say I'm not impressed. That said, I did get a few things, the majority of them not on sale, so I thought I could show you. Every time I go shopping Primark is always the first stop and usually I find everything I want there. I love it, it's cheap and very up to date with the trends, the quality of the materials isn't amazing but you can't expect much when you pay 5€ for a dress.
I found this really cute jumper, unfortunately it wasn't on sale. The full price was 15€ which isn't bad for a jumper, they tend to be more expensive than that in other shops. It's sort of a taupe colour and has beautiful crochet detailing along the shoulders and sleeves. I got it in a size 20.

If you know me, you know at least two things about me: 1) I will NOT sleep without socks on (nightmares just thinking about it) and 2) I love me some pyjamas. And with pyjamas (at least for me) the pants are the first thing to wear out so I have a lot of shirts with no matching pants. Decided to get a new pair, also from Primark, for 8€. They're pretty basic cotton grey pants, the lace in the front is satin and there's a floral pattern in the pockets. I think they're really comfy (just tried them on though, haven't slept in them yet). They're really stretchy so I sized down to a 14/16.

From Primark I also got some house decor items that were all on sale and were great deals.

I didn't check many shops because the bag from Primark was heavy and I didn't want to carry it around but I did stop by H&M for a quick look and found these fake eyelashes for 2€ (the original price is 5€). My boyfriend doesn't understand the thrill of finding something for over 50% discount even if it only costs 5€ to begin with, but I'm sure you ladies can understand. I like these ones because they have a clear band and since I don't wear eyeliner (I am really not skilled with eyeliners) they blend in seamlessly with my own lashes.

Lastly I just stopped by Lush very quickly, not on the same day. They did have very nice sales, mostly on their bath bombs and other bath related items, but I don't usually bathe - I shower - so I don't have use for them. I bought the Eau di Roma toner to try it out. I've used the Tea Tree Water toner before and I liked it, but now I wanted something a bit more gentle so bought that one.

That's all. Have you checked the sales yet?

Have you heard of...

...?

A couple of months ago I heard about a community online called Fitbay and decided to try it. You insert some information about your body such as weight (don't sweat it, you can set your weight as private), height, shape, etc. Then you get a list of "body doubles" - people who have in common some of your measurements. It's a community where you can connect to people who have your body type, see the outfits they wear and how clothes fit. You can also check shops directly inside the Fitbay website and add items to your wish list. I don't know if it's just me or not but I don't have a clear image of what my body looks like so I find it very helpful to be able to see other people that have a body similar to mine and how clothes fit them. I've been using it since I found out about it and I have to say it's pretty cool and people are so friendly and participative there. The sign up is free, in case you were wondering.

Give it a go if you think it sounds interesting and follow me on fitbay here

Week 3 - weight loss journal

5th to 11th of January

Hey there =)

Is it Sunday again? Feels like this week just flew by. I've been very sick this week and not very hungry, so I haven't been eating a lot, mostly small easy to make food. This week was also very very stressful, I had a university exam that really got my nerves up but now I'm feeling much better. I went to the doctor for a check-up and she congratulated me on my weight loss and my blood pressure is much better than it was the first time I went there. The highlight of my week was going shopping yesterday to check on the sales so expect a blog post about what I got (I walked a lot, that should count as exercise right?).

Measurements

Height: 164 cm
Waist: 90 cm (-1)
Hips:114 cm (+1)
Thighs:77 cm
Chest:113 cm

Food Journal

As I mentioned previously I haven't been in the right mindset for cooking, so I've just been trying to find easy to make food. My mom got me a bag of frozen Chinese vegetable mix which is super easy to make and tasty, just need to throw it in a pan, let it thaw and add some spices. I've been drinking plenty of orange juice to help with my cold and eating soup for dinner. As snacks I've been having yogurt with some almonds chopped up or clementines. I've also been drinking hot milk with a little bit of coffee mixed in - I'm not a coffee fan, so I don't drink a lot of it. My water intake has gone down a bit this week, to around 1.5L a day.

Exercise

On Monday I started exercising but about 10 minutes into it I was feeling really down, weak and out of balance, so I stopped. Waited a few days before exercising after that because I was feeling sick. So I exercised only on Friday, dance video, 40 minutes.

Filipa wants

It's so lovely when this time of the year comes and the sales pop up. While browsing through some websites I found some things that I absolutely crave and decided to share it with you. You might notice a trend: peplum tops. Yes I love me some peplum tops and I just can't get enough of it. All the items are available in plus sizes and I'll link them below the pictures.

Which one is your favourite?

Love, Filipa

Week 2 - weight loss journal

Week 29th of December to 4th of January

Hello again and welcome to the second week of my weight loss journal. Now, a little disclaimer: we all know new year's eve happened somewhere in this week, and we all know what that means for diets all over the globe. Since the point of these posts is to be honest, I must say last week I could have done a lot better. I've been so stressed about exam season (it starts tomorrow) and studying that I haven't been as good with exercising as I should and I haven't been paying as much attention to what I eat. But these little failures are part of the journey, if losing weight was easy I wouldn't need a weight loss journal for it. Let's jump in.

Measurements

Height: 164 cm
Waist: 91 cm  (-1)
Hips:113 cm (-1)
Thighs:77 cm
Chest:113 cm (-1)

Food Journal

So what have I eaten last week? Besides the new year's year's eve sins that you can see on the pictures, I ate a lot more pasta than the week before. I had meatballs as well in tomato sauce and plenty of vegetables. The green liquid you see in one of the pictures is my normal breakfast - a green smoothie. Overall I think I could have done better and I'll try to get better this week.

 Exercise

So...the exercise didn't go as well last week either. I exercised a total of 2 times, and both were dance workout videos (40 minutes each time).

We all have them

Read something that gives me pleasure. I do read a lot the entire year, but most of the times it's things that I don't want to read but I have to - books and articles that my teachers want us to read because they're needed for the final exams. I find myself sometimes wishing I had the time to read something I truly want to read. This year I will try to find the time to read something I want (I'd love to read the ice and fire series) besides the piles of books and articles I need to read for university.

Lose weight. I have this one every year, and I am proud to say last year I have done it. This year I want to continue losing weight and getting healthier.

Since we're on the subject - getting healthier. I have made substantial changes when it comes to what I eat, but I'm still not quite where I would like to be. This year I want to decrease my chocolate/cake intake.

Pay more attention to my health and visit the doctor more. I am terrible with this. I'm the kind of person that will postpone a visit to the doctor for as long as I can and by the time I go there I'm frightened that something might be wrong with my health since I haven't been there in so long.

Spend less money on clothes/skincare.

Take more pictures of myself. Those who know me know I dislike taking pictures of myself because I'm very self-conscious about the way I look. That has led me to really not have pictures of important events and memories that I would have liked to keep a picture of. So this year I'll make an effort to not flip out every time someone wants to take my picture.

Dye my hair. Is it only me that has a severe attachment to my hair? I've been meaning to dye my hair just for fun for years, but I never got myself around to do it. Either because I'm afraid of how it will look or because other people might think it's strange that I show up with different coloured hair, or because I don't want all the effort in maintaining the colour. This year I want to buy myself some temporary red dye and go for it! Maybe. We'll see. I'll let you know

And I think this is it. I don't have the specific list of my last year's resolutions but I do remember there's at least two that I have accomplished: losing weight and stop eating chocolate cake/chocolate cookies for breakfast (yes I had chocolate cake for breakfast, I'm a naughty girl).

How about your new year's resolutions?
