Smear for smear campaign

I didn't really know about this until I read this post by Becky, but there's a campaign (#smearforsmear) meant to alert women for the importance of getting tested for cervical cancer, with a test called the pap smear. Becky had the great idea of sharing our own experiences with a pap smear, so that other women might read it and be more inclined to get tested knowing what they can expect from a pap smear. My experience was quite a recent one (less than a month ago). If you don't know what a pap smear is it's a test that screens women for cervical cancer and you should start doing it around the age of 20 or 21 and do it pretty much for the rest of your life - if your first test comes clear you only need to do it every 3 years (I'm giving you the Portuguese guidelines, but if you live somewhere else it shouldn't stray too far from these values).

My experience

When I went to the doctor, I didn't know he'd decide it was time for a pap smear, and I was scared to be honest. I had spoken to his assistant before and she told me that next year I'd have to start being tested, but for now I didn't need to. So then I went into the doctor's room and he asked me a few questions, the usual, and when he looked at my age (22) he yelled "nurse, pap smear!". So that was fun. He left the room so the nurse could get me prepped for it, and she was so nice and friendly, made sure to tell me how the procedure was beforehand so I wouldn't be surprised by it. She told me to strip from the waist down - definitely follow Becky's advice and wear a dress or a skirt, because I was wearing jeans and it felt very awkward to remove my shoes and jeans while I knew she was waiting for me so she could proceed.

After my clothes were off she told me to lay down and put my legs to each side and yes, there's quite a big lamp pointed at your lady bits. At this point the doctor walked in and inserted some weird looking contraption inside me followed by a longer than normal q-tip. The feeling of the said contraption is not pleasant, I'm not going to lie, but it isn't painful either. It's just that odd feeling of having something there that shouldn't be there and you're not used to. But the whole thing goes by very quickly, after that you just need to put your clothes back on and in my case take the pap smear test to a lab so they can get it analysed. After that the lab will analyse it and call when the results are in (I'm still waiting at this point so I can't give you good news yet). That was it, I hope it helps in some way and that you go get yourself tested because such a simple thing can help you prevent a very big and life changing consequence.
